About Lymphedema
If you read my testimony page, you read I mentioned a disability I have had since childhood. This disability is Lymphedema. Until recent times, Lymphedema was one of those medical items you heard very little about but is a disease suffered by an estimated 10 million people in the United States.
According to the Mayo Clinic, "lymphedema is a chronic condition that occurs when the lymphatic system can't drain lymph fluid properly. This causes a buildup of fluid in the tissues, resulting in swelling.
Causes Surgical removal of lymph nodes, Radiation therapy to lymph nodes, Congenital defects of the lymphatic system, and Injury to the lymph system."
In my case, I was born with this dysfunction that affects both of my legs. This is the matter that caused me to leave active duty in the private security industry as I could no longer safely perform my duties as the symptoms worsened. I have since undergone intensive physical therapy and treatment that has restored a much more active mobility, but requires diligent care and discipline to maintain. You may often see me sitting on occasions where others may be standing, this is a result of this very medical condition.
I've come a long way. I was in bad shape, but God blessed me with many chances and wake up calls to change directions. Today 80+ pounds lighter, on a healthier course, and remarkable recoveries thanks to many wonderful and gracious people I'm dedicated to promote God and Country and help anyone I can.
If you suffer Lymphedema and need someone who understands the journey or someone to help advocate for your needs, please reach out to me.
